Emperor - Thus Spake the Nightspirit (cover)
2017 is here, and more than anything else, it is the 20th anniversary of one of the best black metal albums of all time, "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk". Emperor laid the foundation for so many bands to come, with all the intricate riffage (a lot of which is impossible to hear on the muddy studio version, just like in "In the Nightside Eclipse") incorporating seventh chords and so on, not too often heard in black metal. It is very dynamic but there's no lack of really intense sections, made even crazier with Trym's frantic all-over-the-place drumming. This album is easily one of my top three favourites, not least because of "The Loss and Curse of Reverence" which I still consider one of my absolute favourite songs. My only New Year's resolution this year is to cover this beast of an album - it's always pulled me in in a way few albums do, and I've always wanted to get some more insight into all the intricacies going on in there. A great source of inspiration when it comes to songwriting! This time I got some help from Asgorn from Allegiance for the vocals, who I think did a splendid job! We both did the choirs. It's in C-standard because it's simply too much of a hassle to go from my regular tuning, C-standard, to E-standard with all the balancing, intonation etc. that is required, just for one or two covers. Drums were recorded September 4 using a Shure SM57 (high up and right in front of the kit) and a Roland TM-2 module through an E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 audio interface. Guitars were recorded March 21, using said mic (angled, aimed at the center of the left bottom speaker) and interface. Bass guitars were recorded March 21 using the same mic (straight onto the speaker) and interface. Recorded using a Sony HX100V. Edited using Sony Vegas Pro 13.0 x64 and rendered as a 1920x1080 50p (same as the original footage) MP4 video using 2 reference frames, "High", 10 Mbps CBR, CUDA-encoded, with 48 kHz and 384 kbps audio. Pretty much all of the mixing was done in Sony Vegas. The drumkit was a mixture that is composed of Tama Superstar toms and Millenium bass drums. The hi-hat was a Meinl Byzance 14" Medium Hihat. The pedals were Tama Speedcobra. The trigger used was a Roland RT-10K into a Roland TM-2 module (with a custom sample), routed directly to the audio interface. Bass guitar: ESP LTD B-414SM. Amplifier: Fender Rumble 350. Guitar: Jackson Warrior WRMG (with EMG 81/85). Amplifier: Peavey 6505+ and an Ashdown Peacemaker 412A cabinet with Celestion G12E-50 speakers (one of them, the speaker used, is a Celestion V30). Strings: Ernie Ball "Not even slinky" "Custom gauge nickel wound guitar strings" (12 16 24p 32 44 56). Pick: Dunlop Jazz III. The settings are unknown, but likely resembled this: Pre: 6.5 Low: 3.5 Mid: 6.1 High: 8.0 Post: 1.0 Resonance: 4.3 Presence: 8.2 If you rate it, please motivate and write a comment too. Thanks for watching! I used the Guitar Pro tab at (it's almost spot on, but I had to change a few things by ear, watching the live clip and so on): https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/e/em...
