Today I'm going to tell you about my favourite city in Poland - Gdańsk, Pomeranian Voivodeship. It has an incredible atmosphere and charm. The city combines the Baltic Sea, rivers, history and magnificent architecture rebuilt after the Second World War. So Gdańsk. Social media: Insta https://www.instagram.com/elena_holia... The city has been under Polish, Prussian and German patronage, and even managed to be a free city-state. Gdańsk, together with Sopot and Gdynia, belong to the Trójmiasto agglomeration. It is a centre of the marine economy with a large commercial port. In total there are about 21 km of beaches. In the old days there were more than 300 granaries here. Nearly 2 million tourists visit the town each year. In 1686 Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was born here. It was he who invented the mercury thermometer and the temperature scale. It is also the birthplace of Arthur Schopenhauer, one of Germany's most famous thinkers. A city with a thousand years of history, combining the traditions of the cultures of many nations. It is the city of Hevelius, amber and Neptune. It was the birthplace of the Second World War. It is an important commercial and cultural centre, a highlight of the Trójmiasto. Every year in August, the Dominican Fair (dating back to 1260) is held in Gdańsk's Old Town. For a whole month, Gdańsk hosts a cultural and entertainment programme, with local craftspeople selling their wares and goods. Tourists come in droves during this period. Stogi Beach. For many years, it was a fisherman's village until it was envisioned as a holiday destination. It is actually an island, surrounded on three sides by rivers and on the fourth by the Baltic Sea. It is a clean and scenic beach, 4 km long. The sandy beach is up to 100m wide. The sand has a characteristic creaking sound as you walk. There is a tram stop and a car park just next to the beach. By the way, the beach is also accessible by bicycle paths for sports enthusiasts. I like this beach for its white sand, spacious beach and incredible sunsets. The Baltic Sea is the youngest sea, as it was formed only about four thousand years ago. It is shallow and relatively cold. More gold dissolves in its waters than in any other sea. But experts say the Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world. After World War II there were dumps of chemical weapons, which gradually decayed. Human activities also pollute the sea. The Church of St. Barbara (Kościół pw. św. Barbary) was founded in 1387 as a chapel attached to a hospital. The architecture is mixed in style, mostly Gothic with a touch of Baroque and Renaissance. Stengiewna Gate (Brama Stągiewna) is a city gate on the Granary Island, built at the beginning of the 16th century. The defensive towers are called the Milk Jug because of their shape and are the remains of the city's fortifications. The Green Gate is probably the oldest water gate in Gdańsk. The first example of Dutch Mannerism in Gdańsk, a style that gave the city its characteristic beauty. The Długi targ long market in Gdańsk is the main square of the Medieval Region, accessible to pedestrians only. The Royal Route runs along it. There are 250 colourful blocks of flats on the square, four of which were royal residences. There used to be an unknown well here. But then the Fountain of Neptune (Fontanna Neptuna) - the god of sea, who was supposed to bow before the kings - appeared near the residence of the Polish kings. Among the Kashubians this fountain is called Krzysztof. According to legend, everyone who enters the city for the first time has to kiss the sculpture below the back. The Main Town Hall (Ratusz) is the former seat of the Gdańsk authorities, built in the early Middle Ages. There are 37 bells on the tower, towering over the city, which play melodies every hour. Crowning the tower is a life-size gilded statue of Polish King Sigismund Augustus, erected in 1561. In warmer months you can climb the tower's observation gallery, which offers a spectacular view over Gdańsk. So let's climb the Town Hall tower and admire the panoramic view of Gdańsk.
